How the Fridge Fixer Works:
Will it work on my refrigerator?
Will it work on my refrigerator?
The Fridge Fixer will work on full-size residential refrigerators with French Door, Top Freezer, or Bottom Freezer Configurations. It will not work on Side-by-Side models. The Fridge Fixer does require a minimum 0.6″ horizontal gap between the refrigerator and freezer doors.
A Few Things to Mention:
The Fridge Fixer contains plastic and metal parts. Some of the plastic parts are fabricated on 3-D Printers, so the 3-D printed parts do have a slight “grain.”The 3-D Printed parts are strong but not “unbreakable.” They are very durable and should perform as designed under reasonable conditions. We stand behind our designs. If you do have a problem, please get in touch with us.Pictures and instructions may show the Fridge Fixer’s plastic parts in multiple colors. This is done for clarity on the illustrations. All the Fridge Fixer’s plastic parts are black in color. The model numbers listed are the leftmost characters of the refrigerator model number. Your model number will likely have additional characters, but those extra characters should not affect your Fridge Fixer. If the leftmost characters of your model number match the model listed, you found your match. The Fridge Fixer mounts in the gap between the refrigerator and freezer doors. If there are any obstructions in this gap, it can interfere with the Fridge Fixer operation. Check your door gap for obstructions and check the undersides of the doors for anything that will interfere. If you find an obstruction, please check to see if it can be removed (like a previous locking device). If it cannot be removed, please get in touch with us to see if we have a product that will work for your refrigerator.Check to see that your refrigerator and freezer doors are flush when closed. If the freezer sticks out a significant distance from the refrigerator, please measure that offset so we can accommodate it.
History of the Fridge Fixer
We are avid RV’ers and frequently go out on long cross-country adventures ever since buying our coach several years ago. But, one particular problem kept plaguing us – the residential refrigerator kept opening while we were driving. When this happened, everything would start dumping out on the floor. In addition to the huge mess this creates, it was also a huge distraction while driving. If the refrigerator spilled at the wrong time, it could lead to a tragic driving accident.
As bad as this problem is when driving a coach, it is an even bigger issue if you have a trailer with residential appliances. When pulling a trailer, you will know if your refrigerator spilled until you arrive at your destination – sometimes days later. In addition to the mess, the entire fridge and freezer contents can be spoiled.
Residential refrigerators are commonly installed in recreational vehicles, and for good reason. They have high capacities, are comparatively inexpensive, and are attractive. But residential appliances were never meant to be used in moving vehicles. Several devices are out there to keep the doors shut, but most require drilling into the refrigerator and are cumbersome to engage/disengage.
Our RV shipped with a bungee cord wrapped around the refrigerator door handles. It usually worked when the fridge was empty but failed miserably once it was loaded with food. In addition to the frequent fridge spills, our young kids had a difficult time with the bungee. Either they would lose control of the bungee trying to open the fridge – and get snapped in the face or would be unable to reconnect the bungee when they were finished. But, even with the bungee, the refrigerator kept opening. We needed to come up with something.
One significant advantage of cross-country driving is having much time to think. The result of this was the original Fridge Fixer prototype. This device worked as intended, but it was not ideal for manufacturing. Over the next year and countless prototypes later, the Fridge Fixer evolved into the family of devices being offered today.
